Recently, I had to take my Wife’s car into the dealership for a warranty issue. While I was there, I noticed that there was an Old Dutch Pancake house just across the road. Remembering that they had wireless, and I was hungry for breakfast, I scurried over to the restaurant as fast as my little legs could take me. As I don’t have an Iphone 4 yet, I was smart enough to bring my Ipod touch, which has the same wireless capacity as the Iphone.
As the waitress brought me my first cup of coffee, I pulled out the Itouch and a pair of headphones, fired up the machine and instantly saw the network and quickly as well as easily logged into their system. You don’t know the pleasure I had when you can click on the Netflix icon and begin to view your favorite movie, television show or documentary. Let’s just consider how convenient free wireless is to consumers, and why more and more businesses should embrace providing a free wireless network for their clients.
In the picture above, you will notice a wonderful breakfast of eggs, hash browns, sausage and toast, as well as a rerun of one of my favorite childhood series, The Rat Patrol. Now, I was just relaxing, and it was fantastic to completely be immersed in a tiny little screen with high quality video, and great sound through the headphones as I eat my morning meal. If your a busy business person, finding places with free wireless is extremely important because it keep you in touch with the internet, Skype, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, many more internet social tools that help you build your business, write that on line report on the cloud, or even remotely control your home computer, and view cameras inside your home through the wireless service that is becoming very popular with restaurant and coffee shop owners.
That experience showed me that we usually don’t use technology to its fullest extent. Case in point, if you have a smartphone, and use the free wifi service like I did, you can literally run your entire business from one little device. As more cloud based computing platforms become more important and relevant, we are all going to request or demand that broadband service not be scrutinized by the major carriers and capped, such as what Rogers is planning to do. Technology needs to help people be more effective and efficient. I love it when silicone based machines allow us to get more done, expand our limitations and gives us the opportunity to communicate worldwide in a matter of seconds via texting over either the cell network, or, a free wireless hotspot where I had breakfast.
Soon, I think that smartphones will get so powerful and intelligent that we will think twice about grabbing that Ipad 2 sitting on the counter, because anything the Ipad 2 can do, your Iphone can as well. Just a slightly smaller screen, thats all.
